HYDRATION VEST | RUNLY R700 | BLACK

My son and I had been training for the Jumbo Holdsworth Trail Race and knew leading up to the event that we would need a running vest to hold all the mandatory gear. Because we were only doing the 12km course, we knew we wouldn’t need much hydration, so the main requirement was storage and pockets rather than carrying lots of water.

We did quite a bit of research and decided to go with the R700. We ordered one white small for my son and one large black R700 with extended straps for me, based on the website measurements and comments from women who mentioned needing extended straps due to chest size. At 110kg and 6’1”, I suspected the extended straps would be necessary.

We did several training and practice runs with the vests before the event, and I have to say they were very comfortable — especially around the arm holes — with no noticeable rubbing on my arms or chest.

My son is a teenager with a very slim build, so even with the small size the vest was still a bit loose on his shoulders. That said, that’s exactly what training runs are for, and using the spare top loops we were able to tighten it up — I think he ended up using a car key ring to cinch it down, which worked well.

On race day, fitting all the mandatory gear into the vest was no problem. I carried a seam-sealed waterproof jacket, polyprop top, beanie, gloves, map, phone, a 450ml soft bottle, and some lollies in a zip-lock bag, and still had pockets to spare.

In terms of hydration capacity, while I didn’t need it for this race, the vest can take a 2L bladder in the back as well as two 450ml soft bottles up front, and based on the pocket design I suspect it could carry even more if required. This would clearly suit longer trail runs as well.

Performance-wise on race day it was solid. I took a tumble and landed mostly on my right arm and shoulder in gravel, and there was no noticeable damage to the vest.

The only minor consideration is waterproofing. The mesh back panel is excellent for breathability, but in heavy rain may allow some moisture into the rear area. That said, a full 2L bladder would most likely act as a barrier and help block water from reaching the other compartments, and importantly my phone and lollies stored in the front zip pockets stayed completely dry.

Extremely happy with the product. Works great and really looking forward to putting it under the pump.

I am extremely new to running and have a pipe dream of running 5km. I bought a vest and stupidly sized up and not down as I was right in the middle of the measurements. The vest drove me nuts on my first run as it was bouncing all over the place. I contacted customer service and they swapped the vest for the smaller size without question….I was super impressed!
