3 Lesser-Known Trail Runs in Victoria You Need to Try in 2025
Victoria is a treasure trove for trail running, offering everything from rugged mountain trails to scenic coastal paths. We're pretty lucky down here to have so much variety.
While popular events like the Great Ocean Road Running Festival (mostly road though) and the Surf Coast Century often steal the spotlight, some lesser-known trail runs offer equally unforgettable experiences. What I personally love about these smaller events is that they just feel so commmunity-oriented.
Running itself is community-based, with so much comradery and friendship, but I'm talking here about the actual local communities. They come together in an incredible way.
I remember getting there to setup at 5am. There was a fire already setup. And as runners arrived they all gathered around the fire with their hands hanging over the flames to keep warm, and conversations begun. It was nothing like I'd ever seen - just brilliant.
Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, or a unique challenge, these three hidden gems deserve consideration for a spot on your 2025 race calendar.
1. Peaks & Trails (Dunkeld)
Event Overview
Imagine standing at the base of the majestic Grampians, the morning sun casting golden light on the rugged peaks. That’s the setting for Peaks & Trails, held in the charming village of Dunkeld.
I know because I was there last year. It's without a doubt the most beautiful event I've attended. Just stunning.
The event, scheduled for August 10th 2025, is a festival of trail running, offering everything from short introductory routes to grueling ultra-marathons.
When I spoke to the organiser early last year, who is an absolute local legend in every sense of the word, she said to me it's one of the most gnarly events around.
It's tough. There's a lot of climbing. There's falls, grazes and a lot of pain. But it's all worth it.

We couldn't attend last year, but we were involved as a partner of the event. We saw first-hand the amount of effort, care and consideration that has gone into creating and growing this event.
Although we couldn't attend, a couple of months before the event we went out to checkout the course and the scenery. It's a belter. A hidden gem.
